About the Event

Each gathering will start with plena instruction, and will conclude with you playing in a plena jam session.

Viernes de Plena is multi-generational, and prior knowledge of Puerto Rican traditions is not necessary. The instructional portion will focus on plena traditions and its execution. Instruction will start with pandero tuning and basic plena patterns in February, and will progress through plena composition, lead singing, and pandero improvisation by the last session in November. Instruction will be in English and Spanish, but Spanish language proficiency is not a prerequisite to participate.

You do not have a pandero? No worries, loaner panderos will be available during the event. In addition, panderos will be available for purchase from Fig Percusión.

Wondering whether you will have time to get a bite between the office and Viernes de Plena? No worries there either, Viernes de Plena will have pinchos and pitorro cocktails for sale.

Come by yourself, with friends, or with your spouse and children. This program is affordable ($10/session) and for everyone! Our interest is in the growth of the plena community in the DMV.

Add Viernes de Plena to your New Year resolutions and make 2024 the year you become a plenera or plenero!
