Throughout his life, he dedicated his talent and energy to preserving, revitalizing, and sharing this cultural expression both in Puerto Rico and internationally.
He was the founder and leader of the renowned group Viento de Agua, a band that brought plena and bomba to stages around the world, blending tradition and creativity while maintaining a deep connection to Puerto Rican cultural roots. Tito Matos was also a tireless cultural educator, offering workshops, lectures, and performances that helped new generations understand the history, social importance, and community power of plena.
Tito Matos had a special impact on Cultura Plenera (CP), an organization of which he was an important collaborator, source of inspiration, and artistic supporter. His relationship with CP strengthened the mission of preserving and sharing bomba and plena within the Puerto Rican and Latino community. Through his mentorship, performances, and artistic generosity, Tito helped inspire musicians, students, and cultural leaders connected to Cultura Plenera.
His legacy continues to live on in the communities, musicians, and organizations that continue to use plena as a vehicle for education, celebration, and cultural resistance. Tito Matos passed away in 2022, leaving an indelible mark on Puerto Rican music and on all those who had the privilege of learning from and sharing with him.
