Juango is one of the foremost exponents and advocates of Puerto Rican bomba and plena in the diaspora. He was born on May 8, 1951, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. From a very young age, he showed an interest in Afro–Puerto Rican music, studying Caribbean percussion at the Free School of Music of Puerto Rico.

In 1983, he founded the renowned group Los Pleneros de la 21 together with master plena musician Marcial Reyes Arvelo, a pioneering organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of bomba and plena in New York and throughout the Puerto Rican diaspora. Under his leadership, the ensemble has inspired generations of musicians and cultural educators, promoting these traditions through concerts, community workshops, and educational programs.

In addition to his artistic and educational career, Juango has been a fundamental mentor to Cultura Plenera (CP). His guidance, knowledge, and commitment to preserving bomba and plena have deeply influenced the organization’s mission and growth. Through his mentorship, Cultura Plenera has strengthened its community and educational work, continuing the legacy of passing on these cultural traditions with authenticity, respect, and pride. His impact on CP represents not only a musical influence but also an example of cultural leadership and dedication to the Puerto Rican community.
